About IUMS Located in Tehran, the nation's capital, Iran University of Medical Sciences and Health Services was established in 1974 as the International Medical Center of Iran. It started its activities as a non-profit institution, whose main objectives were to provide medical services to the community based on international high standards of quality and to serve as a center for medical education and research projects.
In 1974, the center established a library that built up a collection of thousands of volumes of books and scientific periodicals within a short period of time. The library was connected, by satellite, to the medical information centers in the world. Subsequently, the library was recognized as the East Mediterranean Medical Information Center by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The center established the School of Medicine in 1977 as one of the best teaching and treatment services centers in the country. Following the glorious victory of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, according to a decree issued by the Islamic Republic Revolutionary Council regarding the amalgamation of a number of capital-based institutions of higher education, the name of the center was changed to Iran Medical Center and was officially transferred in 1979 to the Iranian Ministry of Culture and Higher Education (presently known as Ministry of Sciences, Research, and Technology).
The center was officially taken over in 1989 by the Ministry of Health and Medical Education. At present, the institution is operating as Iran University of Medical Sciences and Health Services, being one of the largest medical and educational complexes in the country. The University operates six schools, two centers, two institutes, thirteen teaching and fifteen non-teaching hospitals.
According to a decree issued in 1994 by the State Administrative and Planning Organization, IUMS, in addition to offering educational programs in medicine and the related fields, is responsible to provide health and treatment services to the population residing in five districts within Tehran and five suburban regions. The remaining areas are covered by the other two major universities of medical sciences, namely, Tehran and Shahid Beheshti universities. IUMS covers a total population of 4,038,288 residing in an area of 7,038 square kilometers. |
